A sleek, modern hot tub is something that’s on the wish lists of many. Ask someone why they haven’t jumped into hot tub ownership, and they’ll likely say the hot tub cost.

This is a bit strange considering the vast majority of people don’t actually know the costs involved in both the purchasing and the maintenance of a hot tub!

Just like a car, a few different factors go into the pricing of a hot tub. We’re going to look at these factors for you so you’ll have a better understanding of why the hot tub of your dreams costs what it does and what you can do to make that tub meet your budget.

Factor 1: Hot Tub Quality & Engineering

The better quality the engineering and components of your tub, the higher the upfront costs you can expect to take on. The long-term costs, however, may actually end up being lower in some situations.

Let’s take hot tub jets, for example. Purchase a low-end tub with mediocre or poor jets, and you’ll find yourself paying extra to have those parts replaced or repaired over time. High-end hot tubs with top-notch jets, however, may never need to be repaired or swapped out.

Well engineered hot tubs are also often backed by robust warranties (though this is not always the case). If something does go wrong the company will replace or fix your hot tub at no extra charge.

Factor 2: Hot Tub Features

21st Century hot tubs are more than a massive bucket full of hot water. Today you’ll find varying and customizable jets, speakers, televisions, automation options, advanced filtration systems, and more in the latest and greatest tubs on the market.

As awesome as it may be to buy that hot tub, chances are you don’t need all of those extras. Taking away features that you don’t need will likely reduce the price of your tub, so take some time considering why you want the hot tub and what features you need so that you can get the most value from it.

Hot Tub Costs

It’s important to understand the different price points for hot tubs, depending on what you’re wanting. Hot tubs can range anywhere from $2,500 upwards to $15,000, so not only knowing the features you can’t live without and your budget is an important factor in making a final decision.

1. Luxury Hot Tubs

$9,000 to $15,000

Luxury hot tubs offer the ultimate hot tub experience, coming with top-of-the-line components, durable construction, and fancy features that make these tubs the envy of all hot tub owners. Some of these features include specialized jet systems, gorgeous design and automated features and top-notch filtration.

These hot tubs are easy to operate, require little maintenance, and their quality construction makes it possible for them to run trouble-free for a decade or more.

2. Premium Hot Tubs

$5,000 to $10,000

Though less customized than their luxury counterparts, premium hot tubs come loaded with advanced jets, dazzling water features and fun lighting options. They tend to be more energy efficient than budget-models and many come with advanced control systems and easy-to-use water care and filtration systems.

3. Value Hot Tubs

$3,500 to $8,000

Here is where you’ll see the attractive acrylic glossy shells and synthetic wooden cabinets. These tubs are often outfitted with a load of fun features that, if built well, can leave hot tub owners with a fantastic hot tub experience at a more affordable price point.

4. Entry-Level Hot Tubs

$2,500 to $5,000

This is a good place to start if you just aren’t sure if those hot tub lifestyle is one that’ll stick. These tubs are affordable and offer a nice hot tub experience. The only difference is that they are less attractive in appearance (the tubs are usually formed out of durable plastic than acrylic), they have less features, and a lot can be plugged into a 110V electrical outlet rather than you needing to call an electrician to help with the hot tub install.

Tips For Determining the Cost of a Hot Tub

How much you pay for your hot tub will come down to your lifestyle, your wants, and your needs. Here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for your perfect hot tub:

  • Consider how many people will be using the hot tub on a regular basis. You can lower the cost by choosing a two-person model, but if you have a family of four, you’ll want to choose a larger size hot tub.
  • Take some time to consider the features you need. An audio system may be nice, but do you need it? If you work out or regularly suffer from pain, for example, specialized massaging jets may be worth it.
  • Think about where it’ll be placed. If you need to run power and/or water to the hot tub location, the upgrades to your property will add money to the overall hot tub costs.
  • Research different manufacturers. While brand names aren’t everything, reputable hot tub brands and retailers typically have great customer support and solid warranties.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Buying a hot tub is a major financial decision. If you have questions or concerns about hot tub cost both in the short term and long term, the hot tub specialists at Burton Pools & Spa can help.
