Have You Committed These Pool Owner Faux Pas?

Anyone who has owned a pool will tell you just how much of a learning curve there is to perfecting the art of effective pool maintenance. Keeping your pool looking its best takes a little know how that comes from a few years of trial and error and tips from the pro's. But even seasoned pool owners make mistakes, and may not even realize how their bad habits could be damaging their pool! We've listed a few of the most common ones here.

Adding The Pool Chemicals At The Wrong Time

There is a time and place for everything, including when you should add chemicals to your water. Placing chemicals in the water in the morning or during the day, particularly during the spring and summer months, can severely decrease their effectiveness - especially when it comes to chlorine. Whenever possible, add chemicals to your pool after the heat of the day has passed and the sun has gone down. That way you can reduce evaporation and help ensure the stability of those chemicals.

Not Running The Pump For Long Enough

Too many pool owners put too much faith in chemicals and not enough attention to their pool's circulation. But your pool's circulation is the biggest factor in perfect water chemistry. For the most part, pool owners need to be running their pump for longer periods of time to make sure that the water is circulated properly and flowing at a rate that will effectively maintain the chemical balance. Getting circulation right will allow your chemicals to be more effective and will deter the growth of bacteria and algae.

Underestimating The Effect Of A Crack

A small crack in the wall of the pool - not a big deal, right? Especially if it's above the waterline? WRONG! Even the tiniest of hairline cracks can have a major negative impact on your pool. What may seem light a minor surface crack could be signs of a deeper problem. You could be losing water through these cracks, which can ultimately cause significant damage to the foundation of your pool and surrounding structures. It can also make it nearby impossible to keep your water levels right and your chemistry balanced. Don't ignore cracks. Ask your pool service technician to inspect them and give their recommendations. it could save you a lot of heartache (and money!) in the long run.
